CWN Retreat 2008

Victoria, British Colombia
June 2008
Attended By: Eva Walker

The Canadian Water Network (CWN) was created by the Canadian government to promote partnerships between industry, universities and government on water-related issues facing Canadians. The CWN embraces multidisciplinary partnerships to focus on three main issues of a national scale: -Protecting Watersheds and Ecosystems -Protecting Public Health -Ensuring Sustainable Water Infrastructure

The CWN met in Victoria in June to help develop goals and a vision for the future of the group as it was granted another seven years of funding by the federal government. The workshop involved plenary discussions on water issues, covering a variety of issues including drinking water, land management, ground water, infrastructure, and social issues related to water. Plenary sessions were held along with open discussions in order to promote communication amongst participants. Several networking sessions were also held allowing for contact with regulators, universities and a variety of industry professionals from across Canada, the US and internationally.

Parish Geomorphic’s Eva Walker was invited to attend this years meeting in Victoria as a member of the Student and Young Professionals Committee (SYPC). The committee’s objective is to raise awareness of water issues amongst young people. The SYPC members carry out various “lunch and learns”, workshops and produce newsletters in their local regions which provide information on exchanges and internships for students. At the Victoria meeting, the SYPC developed a mentoring program for young professionals and began defining their role as an integral part of the Canadian Water Network.
