The American Fisheries Society (AFS) 138th Annual Meeting

From August 17th to the 21st employees of Parish Geomorphic attended and made presentations at the AFS annual meeting in Ottawa. This conference brought together thousands of fisheries and aquatic scientists, engineers and practitioners from across North America to discuss issues facing aquatic ecosystems. The theme of this years conference was “Fisheries in Flux”, addressing the problems facing North American fisheries such as, overpopulation, species invasion and habitat degradation.

John Parish along with associates Jack Imhof and Wolfgang Wolter gave a presentation on aspects of geomorphology. John began with a presentation on Stream Restoration followed by a presentation on Instream structures. Various structures were discussed such as rock vines, wood deflectors, wood jims and boulder clusters. Part 2 of the Instream Structures presentation focused on the various design approaches and monitoring the success of a project. Finally the group was presented with a case study example and had to consider multiple factors in choosing which aquatic structure and methods to implement on the given example.
